Get an international drivers permit

Although many countries do not require a local or international licence or permit to drive within their borders, some travellers says it not a bad idea to have one.  For two travellers an international Drivers permit has proven a small but valuable document, if not neccessarily for the reason it is really intended.  A traveller had a prang on a French roundabout and to this day cannot work out just what happened.  However, the police were quickly on the scene and somehow it was the travellers 'international drivers' permit that saved the day.  To lesflic the document was proof of responsibility, that Monsieur  had made some sort of effort to meet the laws of France.  Not so the hapless Canadian in the other car.  "Somehow, he got the rap, says the traveller. "Once I handed over my IDP, the police asked him why he only had his Canadian licence and then berated him about not knowing French driving laws.  I only had my IDP by chance, as it is not required in France, but it is recommended."  In New Zealand an ICP can only be issued by the AA. It is not a driving licence in its own right and is only for private use. It must be produced with a current NZ drivers license when you travel. Together, both documents allow you to drive legally in most other countries.
